Caledon Wild Flower Soc
The
Caledon Wildflower Society turns 119
during 2011 and is still going strong. We
endeavour to bring nature to those who do not have the means to access nature
and those who have a special interest and love for our rich floral diversity.
The Caledon district is very rich in plant species, this enables us to
display approximately 600 different species each year.
We have experts who assist us with the identification of the species,
each species is labelled, stating the proper Latin name, to which family it
belongs and the common name when available.
We
have a landscape section in which we bring nature right in front of you, this
section is built up by means of large wooden bins and bales of straw, all of
this gets covered with plant material to hide the straw and anything unsightly,
rocks and pieces of tree stumps are placed to introduce a natural look.
Water features in the guise of waterfalls and a dam are added.
With all this done the flowers and plants are placed in the landscape,
each plant and flower is placed in a container filled with water.
We
invite local interested parties to make floral arrangements of indigenous
flowers for our display, we also have a children’s section, here school
children are invited to participate by making floral arrangements, once again
indigenous only, or by sketching of flowers.
A
section is dedicated to invader plants, eradication and control methods are
displayed as well as the identification of these plants.
Posters
giving information regarding indigenous plants will be on display, talks
regarding fynbos will be given as well as planting advice and how to care for
your fynbos. Videos of veld scenes
will continuously be showed on a big screen.
For
those who love to shop there will be all sorts of stalls, good local food, a
cafeteria and lots of indigenous plants for sale.
Tractor rides to the Victoria wildflower garden will be available on a
continuous basis.
